Through reading the poem “My Old Love” by Ghada al-Samman, we seek to identify the semiotics of the poetic text that is rich of symbols and semantic fields. Through my reading of the text, I saw that the semiotic method is appropriate; To explore its depths and decipher its symbols and ciphers. The importance of the topic lies in the richness of this poem with conflicts and contradictions, which gave it a semantic and rhythmic aesthetic. The critical reading is based on the principle of association and intersection between signs and texts, and is based on the principle of juxtaposition and dialogue. The semiotic reading is an explanatory reading, examining the literary text through its symbols and signs, and this is consistent with Ghada’s text, which is full of several methods, bananas and signs, which had its aesthetic and artistic significance The language of the text was characterized by ambiguity and accuracy in expression, and as a result the poet excelled in conveying her idea to the recipient in a symbolic suggestive way, far from clarity and directness.
